Sports – Huey Lewis & The News Album review

June 26, 2018 by Cameron Lyle

Huey Lewis & The News 3rd studio album was released on September 15, 1983. The album was finished and supposed to be released earlier in 1983 but Huey’s manager feared that their record label, Chrysalis, was about to go under and he withheld the release of Sports.  Once the album was released it went worldwide fast.  Though the album didn’t have a single number 1 hit, it spawned many great songs including The Heart Of Rock & Roll which peaked at #6, I Want A New Drug peaking at #6,  If This Is It also peaking at #6, Heart And Soul peaking at #8, and Walking On A Thin Line peaking at #18.  Over half of the album placed in the top 20 in the Billboard Hot 100 charts.  I enjoyed this album so much that I had to go pick it up on vinyl because what people say are true, everything sounds better on vinyl!  Below I will be ranking the somewhat perfect album from Huey Lewis & The News.

9. Honky Tonk Blues
The song overall isn’t my cup of tea.  This song doesn’t really fit Huey Lewis’ style of music.  It just doesn’t sound right coming from him.
8. You Crack Me Up
You Crack Me Up is a fun song to listen to but just isn’t one of my favorites on this album.  On most other albums this song would be in the top 4 but just not on Sports.
7. Finally Found A Home
Finally Found A Home has a good hook to the song and is very catchy.  It is overall a very very very good song by Huey Lewis and The News.
6. Walking On A Thin Line
This is another one of the songs that on any other album this may be the top or close to the top of best songs on the album.  It is really good.
5. I Want A New Drug
I Want A New Drug is a very good song lyric wise.  The song has a good sound and fits perfectly with Huey Lewis’ voice and I highly recommend this song if you want a taste of Huey Lewis and The News’ talent.
4. Bad Is Bad
The song Bad Is Bad is one of those songs that is looked over because of all the other great songs and hits that were on this record.  The song is honestly very good and if you haven’t heard it before you should give it a listen.
3. The Heart Of Rock & Roll
The Heart Of Rock & Roll is a great song to dance or sing or dance and sing to. The song is upbeat and catchy.  It will be in your head the rest of the day but is that really a bad thing?
2. Heart And Soul
I had a tough time deciding between Heart And Soul and The Heart Of Rock & Roll but I ultimately decided to put Heart And Soul at the second spot.  The song is really good and also catchy.  You have probably heard this song on the radio or somewhere, it is really popular.
1. If This Is It
Hands down this is the best song on this record, my opinion of course. This was the first Huey Lewis & The News song I ever heard and let me tell you what, it is also the best song Huey Lewis & The News has done.  The song is perfect, Huey does a great job, and I would love to see it in person, in concert. But all and all great song.
This album is one of the essential albums of the 80s.  If you enjoy any of these songs, I would strongly recommend checking out his other albums which sound just as good as this one.  You can expect other Huey Lewis & The News album reviews in the future by us, the Vinyl Boys.  I would give this album a 4.5/5 and this is because Honky Tonk Blues and You Crack Me Up are songs that I just don’t enjoy as much as the other great songs on this record, but a 4.5/5 is still a great score so you should definitely check the album out!
