My favorite band has to be the Steve Miller band. Not only do they have a very distinct rock sound, they also know how to play the blues. The Steve Miller band started off as the Steve Miller blues band in the early sixties. They had gigs at nightclubs and even sang backup for Chuck Berry. Then in the seventies, they started to drift more towards rock. Their fifth album and first hit album was The Joker, released in 1973 by Capitol Records. A few years after releasing The Joker, they released what I would say their greatest album is, Fly Like an Eagle, released in 1976 also by Capitol Records. This album shows both rock and roll and techno music. Here is my ranking of the album.
1. Rock’n Me – Rock’n Me was the second of three number one hits by the band. It’s a great song that you’ll usually find on a classic rewind station.
2. Fly Like an Eagle – Fly Like an Eagle shows some of the Steve Miller bands ability to create smooth techno music.
3. Serenade – Most people wouldn’t recognize this song, but I think it is really catchy and easy to sing along to due to it not having many lyrics.
4. Dance, Dance, Dance – This song has some unforgettable guitar solos and a little bit of country.
5. Take the Money and Run – I thought about ranking this song higher because of how catchy it is. But I just wanted some variety in my higher ranking.
6. You Send Me – A classic song by Sam Cooke. The band put their own cover of it in the album.
7. Wild Mountain Honey – I think that this song sounds a little different than the others. It also has a techno feel and a soothing vibe.
8. Mercury Blues – This is a great blues song that shows the band’s capability to play different genres.
9. Sweet Maree – Again, most people wouldn’t recognize this song, but if you were to hear it, you would know it was a blues song.
10. The Window – This is another techno/ rock song. It reminds me of Fly Like an Eagle, but it’s not nearly as good.
11. Blue Odyssey – This is a very short song that has no words. It mainly just for a feeling when listening to this record on vinyl (which I do).
12. Space Intro – Just like the previous song, when you put this album on the record player, this is the first song that comes on. It’s basically just the introduction for Fly Like an Eagle.
As you can see, there isn’t a song that I don’t really like. Some of the techno songs aren’t very enjoyable for me, but I think that they add creativity to the album. Every song is unique and has a different feel to it. You start listening to rock, and next thing you know you’re listening to blues. Overall, this is my favorite album by the Steve Miller band. It has a lot of variety, shows of some blues, country, rock, and techno music.
