Quite possibly one of the greatest albums ever, Cracked Rear View, was released on July 5, 1994 (24 years today) by Hootie & The Blowfish. It was an immediate hit and went on to sell fourteen million copies. Surprisingly, none of the songs hit number one, but three of them made top ten, which is pretty good for a first album. Only Wanna Be With You peaked at number 6, Let Her Cry at number 9, and number 10 being Hold My Hand.
1. Hold My Hand – Although this song only hit number 10, it’s gotta be the best one in the album. It’s got really catchy lyrics that are easy to sing along to.
2. Only Wanna Be With You – This is one of those songs that you instantly recognize when you first here the guitar. It has and amazing chorus that people find themselves singing harmony to.
3. Running from an Angel – most people wouldn’t recognize this song, but it’s definitely worth listening to. It’s not to long and has a sweet violin solo in the beginning.
4. Let Her Cry – This song shows Darius Rucker’s ability to sing a slower song that delivers a message. This is another catchy song to sing along to that you’ll find very moving.
5. Hannah Jane – This is one of those songs that when it comes on, you think, “I know I’ve heard this song,” but you only think that because it shows how distinct Hootie & The Blowfish really are.
6. Time – Another slow song that has great lyrics and a powerful message. Noting much left to say about that.
7. Drowning – I would go on to say that this is one of the more upbeat songs in this album. It’s so fast that it’s hard to sing along to, but it still has a good beat to it.
8. Look Away – This song has a unique sound to it. It’s different than the other songs on the album and is quite enjoyable to listen to.
9. I’m Goin’ Home – Due to it not having many lyrics, this is something that you’ll find yourself singing along to even if you haven’t heard it.
10. Goodbye – This song has a more classic feel to it. The only instruments you’ll hear are a piano and a keyboard.
11. Not Even the Trees – As soon as the guitar starts playing, you know that this song is going to be more laid back. It stays the same throughout most of the song and has a relaxing feel to it.
12. Motherless Child – I believe that this song is considered a “hidden track.” It actually isn’t to bad.
Overall, this is a really great record. I don’t have anything bad to say about it. If the name Hootie & The Blowfish doesn’t sound familiar to you, listen to some of the higher ranked songs, and you’ll definitely recognize them.
